The Islamic Solidarity Games 2013 have opened in the Indonesian city of Palembang in South Sumatra with the participation of 78 Algerian athletes in this third edition of the competition.
Representing Algeria at the games from Sept 22 to Oct 1 are 50 men and 28 women who are largely composed of junior athletes seeking exposure to international competition, says Chef de Mission and and President of the Algerian Boxing Federation (FAB) Nabil Saadi.
"The Algerian Olympic Committee (COA) has welcomed the participation of many of our young talented athletes in this competition to allow them to grow," he said during the opening ceremony on Sunday.
Algerian athletes will compete within eight disciplines, all individual ones in the following: badminton (five athletes), karate (20), athletics (13), swimming (12), taekwondo (6), tennis (5), weightlifting (11) and wushu (6) with the aim of preparing them for future events notably the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.
The opening ceremony of the games was held at the Jakabaring Wonderful Stadium in the Athletes Village in the presence of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Algerian athlete Kenza Dahmani, gold medalist in the 10,000 metres at the Mediterranean Games in Mersin, Turkey last June, was flag-bearer of the Algerian contingent at the opening ceremony.
