Bahrain Athletes Set for Islamic Games

Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) board member Abdulhakim Al Shino will today travel to Jakarta as he heads the Bahrain delegation to the third Islamic Solidarity Games.

Al Shino, who became a member of the BOC board for the first time in this electoral cycle, will head a three-discipline delegation at this 10-day event.



The Games are set to take place in Palembang, the capital city of South Sumatera, from Sunday to October 1, as 33 athletes will spearhead the kingdom in three sports - athletics, karate and taekwondo.

Speaking before his departure, Al Shino stressed that Bahrain's participation in the Games is in line with directives of BOC president Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa and part of the BOC strategy to actively be a part of regional, continental and international sporting competitions.

Al Shino noted that despite given a short time to prepare for the Games which was approved recently, the BOC has been keen to prepare its sports teams to represent the kingdom the best way possible. Al Shino will be traveling along with the first batch of athletics team members who will be competing at the Games.

The athletics team consists of administrators Saad Al Buainain and Mohammed Hassan, physiotherapist Eid Hassan and head coach Vladimir Brigadniy, as well as 11 athletes, led by former world champions Maryam Yusuf Jamal and Youssef Saad Kamel.

The other athletes are Belal Mansoor Ali, Mimi Belete Salem, Ali Khamis, Hassan Mahboob, Dejene Regassa, Genzeb Shumi, Shitaye Eshete Mubarak, Mohammed Yousef Salman and Tareq Mubarak Taher.
The athletics event is scheduled to take place from September 25 to 29.

Both Bahrain's taekwondo and karate teams will heading to the Far East tomorrow via Doha, with the taekwondo team comprising head coach Tawfeeq Nuwaiser of Jordan.

Nuwaiser had named five of his best martial arts fighters for the competitions. They are Hamad Al Binkhalil, Hesham Al Hashimi, Fahad Al Bosta, Mohammed Ahmed and Fajar Al Binali. Their events will be held from September 27 to October 1.

The karate team, which also leaves tomorrow, consists of coach Mohamed Larbi Boumezbeur and players Noora Ahmed, Mustafa Al Shaikh, Bashar Al Sanjar, Mohamed Al Shaikh and Sara Al Sabah. The karate competitions are due to take place from Sunday to September 26.

Bahrain delegation director Sameer Shuwaiter deputy director Maryam Mardana and treasurer Abdulla Rabeia had already left for Palembang to finalise all necessary arrangement to prepare for the teams' arrival.

Around 1,759 athletes and 624 officials will take part in the Games. There are 13 sports that will be competed. The sports are athletics, aquatics-swimming, archery, badminton, basketball, football, karate, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, beach volleyball, weightlifting, and Wushu.

Participating nations are Algeria, Azerbaijan, Brunei Darussalam, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Indonesia, Guyana, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Maldives, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uganda, the UAE and Malaysia.
